My best friend in High School was a military brat. And by military brat, I solely mean her dad was in the Air Force. Her family didn't live on base (nor did she ever dress in camo) but they did move around a lot before they settled in my hometown. Her parents were Catholic and when I reflect back on their "strictness", going to church was nonnegotiable, they always ate dinner together as a family and both parents were active in their children's lives (four daughters). I wouldn't say her parents were super strict by any means but I suppose she may have different feelings... and that is how I found myself binging all episodes of Military Bratz Podcast.
Military Bratz Podcast is hosted by Chloe and Jeweliana, two 20-somethings who grew up in military households. They have created a platform to talk about what it was like growing up with parents who were/are in the military, what it was like for them, what they wish people would understand, and how it affected their childhoods and ultimately impacted their lives as adults. As someone who did not grow up in a military household, I found they give such a raw perspective on what it was like for them. It is incredibly eye-opening (and entertaining:). Especially after the first episode when you hear about what it was like for them growing up and what rules they had to follow. Listening, you are like WTF these parents are CRAAZZY. But then in episode 2, they bring their moms on and it really makes you so much more empathetic towards them and the decisions that they had to make for their family. It made me think about that TikTok about Gilmore Girls, where it says when you were a kid watching you agreed with Rory and then when you got older you related with Lorelai but now as a full adult you realize that Emily was not the villain but right all along.
I really think this podcast will prove to be invaluable to kids growing up in military households right now. For them to hear that they are not alone in the feelings and struggles they face but also to hear from a parent's perspective could be life-saving. I think it's really important for military kids to have visibility, as they face some of the most challenging life events that most civilian kids have the luxury of never seeing.
Military Bratz Podcast is brand new so there are only a few episodes thus far, making it easy to binge. If you are from a military family or just want to understand what it is like growing up in one, this podcast is for you! Will you listen? Can you relate? What say you?
